Burberry

British heritage and contemporary style.

Discover the story

Founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, Hampshire (England), Burberry is one of the world’s most iconic British luxury fashion houses. Its history is intrinsically linked to polar and military exploration, having outfitted the pioneers who conquered the South Pole (such as Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton).

The technological innovation that solidified the brand’s legacy was the invention of gabardine in 1879 and its patent in 1888. Unlike the waterproof garments treated with rubber or heavy oils that were prevalent during that era, Burberry’s gabardine uses a densely woven warp and weft combed cotton fabric, which is pre-waterproofed prior to weaving to create a breathable, water-resistant, lightweight barrier.

The brand’s iconic beige-based tartan with black, white, and red stripes (The Burberry Check) was officially registered as a trademark in 1924, initially used as the inner lining for Trench military coats issued during World War I before becoming the global symbol of the fashion house.
