Bottega Veneta
Italian design and leather goods.
Discover the story
Founded in 1966 in Vicenza, Italy, by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro, Bottega Veneta is an Italian luxury house specializing in leather goods and haute couture. From its earliest days, the brand set itself apart from the trend of stamping visible logos on its products, embracing the maxim of its historic founding motto: "When your own initials are enough" (When your own initials are sufficient).
The most notable technical and artisanal distinction of the brand is the Intrecciato technique, a method of weaving flexible napa leather strips that are hand-braided, originally developed because the factory's first sewing machines could not pierce the thick hides. This weave not only creates a distinctive three-dimensional raised texture, but also structurally reinforces the bag without the need for rigid linings.
As a milestone in its industrial evolution, the company's headquarters moved in 2013 to a restored 18th-century villa in Montebello Vicentino, and in 2006 the brand opened its own leather goods school (Scuola della Pelletteria) to ensure the generational succession of local artisans and preserve the knowledge of hand braiding.
