Diptyque
Parisian perfumery and olfactory universe.
Discover the story
Founded in Paris in 1961 at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain by three artists with complementary backgrounds —Christiane Gautrot (interior designer), Desmond Knox-Leet (painter), and Yves Coueslant (stage designer)—, Diptyque began as a bazaar selling fabrics, wallpaper, and rare objects brought back from their travels around the world.
The brand revolutionized the home fragrance sector when it launched its first line of scented candles in 1963 (with notes such as Hawthorn, Cinnamon, and Tea). Diptyque is known for its strict artisanal approach: the waxes are specific blends of paraffin and vegetable waxes designed to optimize combustion and olfactory diffusion, while each cotton wick is placed by hand to ensure an even burn.
The brand's most recognizable graphic element is its oval label, inspired by the shape of an 18th-century medallion and the patterns of ancient Roman textiles. The label typography looks messy at first glance, but it follows a set of hand-drawn calligrams designed by Desmond Knox-Leet to tell the story or suggest the nature of each scent.
