Junya Watanabe
Japanese experimentation and the reconstruction of clothing.
Discover the story
Junya Watanabe joined Comme des Garçons in 1984 after studying at Bunka Fashion College. After taking on responsibilities within the house, he launched his first collection under his own name in 1992 and later brought his work to the Paris runways.
His designs are defined by exploring garment construction: complex patterns, volume transformations, technical treatments, and a constant reworking of familiar elements such as denim, jackets, workwear, or military garments. Innovation typically arises from deconstructing a known silhouette and rebuilding it using a different logic.
Collaborations with specialized manufacturers and brands have expanded that research into vastly different materials and technologies. Junya Watanabe thus occupies a unique territory between conceptual fashion, textile engineering, and everyday functionality.
