Longines

Swiss watchmaking brand rooted in tradition and elegance.

Discover the history

Founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, Longines is one of the longest-continuously operating Swiss luxury watchmaking brands. Its iconic winged clepsydra logo, registered in 1889, is the oldest active factory trademark preserved unchanged in WIPO’s records.

Longines’ defining historical contribution was its role as a pioneer in international sports timing and high-precision aviation. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh collaborated with the brand to create the Hour Angle watch, a navigation instrument that allowed pilots to calculate their exact geographic longitude by combining time readings with astronomical observations.

Technically, the brand was responsible for developing some of the most precise and revered mechanical chronograph calibers in history, including the legendary 1936 Caliber 13ZN, widely regarded as one of the first chronographs with a flyback function (instant zero reset).
