Yohji Yamamoto
Japanese avant-garde, black, and radical construction.
Discover the story
Yohji Yamamoto launched his brand journey with Y’s in 1972 and brought his creative universe to Paris in the early 1980s. His arrival on the European fashion scene directly challenged dominant ideas about proportion, finish, gender, and beauty in Western fashion.
Black, asymmetries, voluminous shapes, and the intentional use of space between the body and garment became fundamental elements of his design language. Yamamoto has treated clothing as a moving construction, where the cut and drape matter just as much as the material, and where apparent imperfection can be a deliberate choice.
His influence extends far beyond Japanese fashion. Yohji Yamamoto has turned a deeply personal vision of pattern-making and silhouette into one of the most recognizable languages of international avant-garde.
